Community and Professional Programs

Contact your local Family and Community Health Sciences (FCHS) professional in your Rutgers Cooperative Extension county office (part of the New Jersey Agricultural Experiment Station) for more information on how to schedule a program for a group or find out where in the community it's being offered. Workshop topics include:

  • Dealing with Food Allergies in Food Service - A workshop for food handlers.
  • Emergency Readiness for School Food Service (3MB PowerPoint file)
    Be ready for a crisis by planning ahead. Tips for whether you only feed students or whether the school is used for an emergency shelter. You may request a program or download this presentation.
  • Food Allergies and Schools - A program for teachers, school nurses, and administrators. Overview of food allergies and applicable laws and strategies for keeping students safe.
  • Food Safety at Home - Protect your family from foodborne illness and be sure your home prepared food stays safe.
  • Food Safety for Food Servers - Protect your clients, whether the public or students, from foodborne illness by practicing safe food handling. Audiences: school food service mangers or workers and organizations (PTA, religious groups, youth groups, fire houses, and others) that serve food or host meal functions.
  • Food Science and Food Safety Training Programs - University short courses designed to provide skills and insights into the food industry, including food science, safety, and protection.
  • Handle with Care: Food Safety for Infants and Young Children - Protect infants and young children from foodborne illness by keeping breast milk, formula, and food safe. The curriculum is also available for purchase.
  • Managing Food Allergies - Provides background and practical advice for managing food allergies in different settings. Workshop is suitable for individuals, parents and caregivers of food allergic children, schools, and organizations.

Programs for Youth

  • Germ Alert or Kids Fight BAC - Teaches children about hand washing and safe food handling using hands-on activities, stories, and more. Programs tailored for classrooms and community groups in grades K to 8. Contact Family and Community Health Sciences or 4-H Youth Development professionals in your county.

  • Which Fish Are Safe to Eat?
     Some species of fish contain unsafe levels of contaminants. This exhibit helps pregnant women and high-risk individuals with compromised immune systems make safe choices when eating fish. Includes handouts.
